Small Claims Procedure Training for Judicial Officers and Court Staff,

Background The Small Claims Procedure was established to adjudicate over claims whose subject matter does not exceed ten million shillings such as, matters arising out of supply of goods, debts or rent. Implementation of Small claims Procedure commenced in 2012 with 6 pilot Courts but has been rolled out to an extra 20 Courts as of December 2015. This brings the total number of operational SCP Courts to 26. The 19th Annual Judges' Conference, 26th - 29th January, 2017

President Yoweri Museveni on Friday 27th January, 2017 officially opened the four day Annual Judges conference. The Conference run under the theme:"The Uganda Judiciary as the Guarantor of the Rule of Law". A keynote address titled "The Role of the Judiciary as Guarantor of the Rule of Law in the Contemporary World" was delivered by Hugh Corder, Professor of Law, Cape Town University. The Chancellor of the Courts of Guyana, Hon. Justice Carl Singh also presented a paper on The Role of an Independent Judiciary in Emerging Democracies. The Colloquium was opened by the Hon. Principal Judge of Uganda, Justice Dr. Yorokamu Bamwine on 17th Novenber, 2016. Present were Executive Director of the Judicial Studies Institute, Justice Dr. Henry Peter Adonyo, Judges of the Courts of Judicature, the Chairman of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) Board, the Director General of URSB, Chief Magistrates among others. The Chief Justice of Uganda announced the establishment of Uganda Judicial Studies Institute (JSI) during the opening of the Judges Annual conference on 5th January 2004. The institute operates as a department of the Judiciary on a semi- autonomous basis, separate from the day-to-day operations of the Judiciary.
